Self-Care for Health Professionals

Burnout syndrome is a response to chronic work stress, characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and decreased personal fulfillment. This syndrome is especially prevalent in health professionals who work in direct contact with patients, caused by work pressure, the demands of health institutions and patients.

Burnout syndrome in nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic increased markedly to mitigate this phenomenon as healthcare professionals face one of the most severe healthcare crises in recent history, a significant increase in the prevalence of burnout, manifested in symptoms such as depersonalization, emotional exhaustion, and stress, has been observed.

Coping and managing emotions

Emotions are reactions product of external or internal stimuli of people, they are interpreted through feelings and thoughts. The purpose of this article is to analyze the emotional experiences of nursing in the nursing practice through human care.

Emotional intelligence is a subject that has not been sufficiently addressed in medicine, science shows us that it is not a fashionable subject but on the contrary it is a set of interrelated skills that involve the ability to control oneself, and that have to do with the ability to perceive accurately, as well as to value and express emotions of oneself and to generate feelings that facilitate thinking and understanding the emotions of others.

Stress management

There is a relationship between Emotional Intelligence and Coping with Stress: A significant positive correlation was found between emotional intelligence and coping strategies to stress, suggesting that greater emotional intelligence may facilitate better stress management in health personnel. "The coping strategies that showed higher scores were planning, positive reinterpretation and growth, as well as religious coping.

In the healthcare professions, the incidence of stress is serious because it affects not only the professional who suffers from it, but also the patient who depends on his or her care.

Psychosocial risks and in particular stress have become one of the main problems for occupational health and safety.
